The Benefits of Infrared Sauna

A three minute read by Kat M. Lui, LAc

When the change to cooler seasons is upon us, and we’re finding ourselves a little cold and stiff after a fun day outdoors, one of the best things you can do for your health is to have a nice hot cuppa tea, and settle into the silent warm bliss of an infrared sauna.

Sauna bathing is a form of whole-body heat therapy that has been used in various forms around the world for thousands of years. The potential benefits range from improved hygiene, health, social, and spiritual wellbeing.

Scientific evidence suggests that sauna bathing, done regularly, can induce profound physiological effects.

How does it work?

A systematic review of over forty clinical studies involving nearly 4000 participants conclude that intense short-term heat exposure elevates skin and core temperatures, which activates the parts of our brain responsible for homeostasis and cardiovascular regulation, which then influence skin blood flow, and sweating. You can think of it as training the body to reach states of stable equilibrium, or homeostasis. On a cellular level, acute whole-body heat therapy induces discrete metabolic changes. Research suggests that heat stress induces adaptive mechanisms similar to exercise.

Not only can regular infrared sauna benefit our whole-body health via homeostasis, scientists are also interested in the evidence supporting its ability to normalize blood pressure and treat congestive heart failure.

See for yourself, know for yourself.

There’s science, and then there’s your body. Our motto is to see for yourself, know for yourself. Personally, I love infrared sauna for managing chronic pain, especially for folks with weaker, colder constitutions. These are the people who say, “I can’t ever seem to get warm enough” or “my symptoms are always worse in the winter/cold”.

This holiday season, Wise Mountain Medicine is offering 50% off your first 30 minute infrared sauna session. The unlimited monthly package is only $75. This offer has been extended until the end of February 2022. Our private infrared sauna is perfect for one, and cozy for two. Couple it with an acupuncture session for the ultimate in self care during the colder months in Bend. Book a sauna session.

Here’s to your Health & Happiness!
